NEW DELHI, Aug 14 – On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a rousing address, expressing unwavering confidence in the nation’s path toward becoming a Viksit Bharat — a developed economy — by 2047.

Highlighting a twin focus on sustained economic growth and inclusive social initiatives, the President praised the country’s progress, crediting citizens’ hard work and “a decade of sagacious economic management” for making India the fastest-growing major economy with a GDP growth rate of 6.5% last fiscal year.

Invoking the spirit of Swadeshi, she hailed initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan as key drivers of self-reliance and resilience in the global economy.

Emphasizing that “development is only meaningful when it benefits the most marginalized,” President Murmu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to constitutional values — justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity — and lauded welfare schemes aimed at expanding access to education, healthcare, and opportunities for all citizens, particularly women, youth, and historically disadvantaged communities.

Nationwide Independence Day celebrations are underway, with the Prime Minister set to address the nation from the Red Fort on August 15, where he is expected to unveil new women’s welfare measuresexpanded farmer support plans, and an economic strategy to position India as the world’s third-largest economy in the coming years.

This year’s festivities prominently honored sanitation workers, underscoring a holistic vision of national progress that values contributions from all sections of society. Streets across India were awash in the tricolor, accompanied by patriotic songs and cultural programmes, paying tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters.

The President’s message concluded with a call to reclaim India’s “tryst with destiny” by 2047, powered by empowered citizens and an unwavering spirit of nation-building.
