Constructive Dialogue on Border Peace
New Delhi, August 19, 2025 – National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi led the 24th round of Special Representatives’ talks focused on India-China boundary issues. Both sides committed to maintaining peace and tranquility along the border, marking the talks as “positive and constructive.”
Key Agreements and Working Groups
The discussions resulted in the formation of an Expert Group under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) to explore “early harvest” steps in boundary delimitation. Additionally, a Working Group was established to strengthen border management, expanding General Level Mechanisms to cover eastern and middle sectors, complementing the western sector.
Bilateral Visits and Dialogues
During his visit, Wang Yi met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss bilateral, regional, and international cooperation. Key issues included counter-terrorism efforts and concerns regarding China’s Brahmaputra Dam.
Revival of Border Trade and Connectivity
Both nations agreed to reopen border trade through Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La Pass, and Nathu La Pass, enhancing economic and people-to-people ties. Plans to restore direct flight connectivity and improve visa facilitation were also outlined, signaling a desire for closer interaction.
Regional and Global Implications
This round of talks signifies a new phase in India-China relations, emphasizing cooperation and peaceful conflict resolution based on earlier agreements. The upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China will further highlight the importance of this dialogue for regional stability and multilateral collaboration.
